Exolife iPhone 4 Rechargeable Battery Case Review

If you’re an active and on-the-go iPhone 4 user, making sure your battery is always charged is a necessity. Having to make an important phone call, play that song, or send that last minute email or text message only to be greeted by a black screen is extremely frustrating. Sure, using a car charger can certainly help guarantee you make it through your day. But, what if you’re away from your car?

This is where the Exolife iPhone 4 Rechargeable Battery Case from Exogear makes itself known as the “Johnny on the spot” of charging solutions. The Exolife is always with you and your phone because it doubles as a protective case. This ensures that you will never be without your phone due to battery drain. In our testing, we found that the Exolife’s 1500mAh battery adds anywhere from 2-3 times the battery life to your iPhone 4, (which has a 1420mAh battery).

Previous generations of this type of rechargeable battery case design led to greatly impaired reception and signal quality. Exogear remedies this issue with their patented Exoclear technology, that guarantees no signal loss or degradation of any kind caused by the Exolife case. This was a huge problem with competitors’ solutions for the iPhone 3G and 3Gs, so this is a great relief.

The case is a two-piece system that consists of the base for the phone to slide into and a snap on bumper-like trim piece to keep your phone both secure and protected. While the extra built-in battery does add bulk to your phone (to be expected), Exogear claims that it is the thinnest and lightest solution available.

Overall, we strongly recommend the Exolife case for your iPhone 4. With it’s tank-like build and negligible addition in weight, it is something that we’ll be using each and every day.

The Exolife Rechargeable Battery Case can be purchased at Exogear for $89.95 and is occasionally offered at lower prices on Amazon

Review: Phonesuit Primo Battery Pack

Anyone who has used a modern smartphone for longer than a few hours knows that battery life is a concern. This is especially pronounced on the iPhone because of the non-removable battery. Many companies have made attempts to address battery life. However, sometimes you just need a little extra battery life without all the bulk associated with a case or ugly dongle sticking out the bottom of your phone.

Enter the new Primo micro battery pack from Phonesuit. It’s a small 800mAh lithium ion battery designed to plug into the bottom of the iPhone, iPod, etc and provide some additional juice when needed. It’s small enough to fit in your pocket, and comes with a cap that can be attached to your keyring. It charges via mini USB, and has lights to indicate charge status and battery life remaining. It’s not much larger than a lipstick case, and comes in an attractive case reminiscent of the iPhone’s styling with a chrome ring and black or white case.

Phonesuit claims an additional 3 hours of talk time with the Primo attached. I’m not a huge phone talker, but I had the chance to use it over the weekend to test some recharge cycles. I found that it will consistently recharge my phone an additional 65-75% before the Primo is drained. That makes sense considering the mAh it contains, and it’s a welcome addition to the lineup. Another advantage mentioned is that with the Primo attached, the speaker is no longer covered by your hand while playing games in landscape mode.

I’ve used several different external batteries/charging solutions. My favorite iPhone case/charger is still the MiLi Power Pack. However, I use a case with my phone, and I don’t want the hassle of removing my case every time I need a quick top-off and don’t have a charging cable with me. The Primo is perfect to slide in my pocket and carry with me; I know that it will allow me to continue using my iPhone 3Gs until I can get to a charger.

At the $34.95 price, this is something I’ve found is good peace of mind. There’s nothing worse than being stuck somewhere with a dead phone battery. Slip this in your pocket or purse, and head out the door. If you need to juice up, just plug it in. It is compatible with iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod, iPod Classic, iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and iPod Nano.

A simple yet elegant solution.

A Peek into 4th Gen iPhone?

After digesting all of the available information on the newly announced Apple iPad, it’s becoming pretty apparent where Apple is going with their strategy. Even though Mac has seen huge increases in Mac/Macbook sales, they need another step in order to get the average consumer to make the leap into a $1000 sale.

In comes the iPad, an purported $499 “tablet” that really doesn’t offer any compelling advantage over the iPhone/Touch. What this will enable Apple to do is lead consumers from their phone to a larger experience in the “tablet” which will eventually lead them to a full-fledged laptop. However, this isn’t the interesting part of their strategy.

If the conjecture that the iPad is “just a big iPhone” is true, then shrinking the iPad back down to iPhone size could very well give us a good indication of what we’re going to see this June. Most likely the important piece of the iPad is actually Apple’s first foray into chip making, the A4. Imagine the A4 processor stuffed into an iPhone with all of the visual queues of the iPad. Not only is this exciting to me, but it makes perfect sense.

The iPad now is in a niche market, but since all of the software will be resized to fit the larger screen, we could now very likely see the much anticipated larger screen for the iPhone 4G (iPhone HD?).

If iPhone 4.0 bring along a slew of long awaited changes such as background processing, revamped interface/lockscreen, bluetooth keyboard support, theming, 5mp camera, and other things that make jailbreaking so popular, we can now add to our list the high resolution screen along with an aluminum case. If Apple can figure out how to make the iPad’s antennas work with the aluminum shell, hopefully they can figure it out for iPhone 4G. Seriously, who likes the glossy case on the current 3G/3Gs?

This is a Photoshop of the iPad which I’ve resized and incorporated some changes to try and demonstrate how the next-gen iPhone could look if Apple continues the revamp. It would only make sense because the rest of their product line has the same theme.

Was I right? I guess we’ll find out in June.

Please note that this is a Photoshop render I did based on the iPad artwork available from Apple.com/iPad. It’s not the real thing (yet).
